You Don't Need More Self Control To Be Healthy

One of the biggest lies that diet culture sells you in subtle and not so subtle ways is that you aren’t thinner because you lack self-control and willpower.

And it is super convincing. You believe that your lack of self-control is what is standing in the way between a healthier, thinner and happier you.

If only you could stay on track

If only you could control your portion sizes better

If only you could keep your hands off of the “junk” food in the house

If only you drank more water

If only you didn’t stress or emotionally eat

It feels terrible to feel like it is all your fault. That there is something wrong with you. That you are lazy. That you lack self-control.

Now sit up straight in your chair and listen up because what I’m about to tell you is really important.

You don’t need more self-control to be healthy, because lack of self-control is not ACTUALLY the problem.

The REAL problem is a 70 billion dollar diet industry that wants to sell you a product or plan that doesn’t work long term, and then tell you that it is your fault that it doesn’t work.

Because if you believe that it is your fault, then you will try again, and again. You will be a repeat customer, putting more dollars in their pocket.

And they do this by creating a problem to fix that doesn’t exist - that your body is not good enough as it is - but that is a conversation for another post.

These plans and products encourage restriction to get thinner and healthier..

When you restrict your intake, you will want to eat more of what you are restricting. You will think about food more. Forbidden foods will taste better than they ever. As a result, you will feel out of control with food when you ‘let’ yourself have food you restrict. You will be “off track.” Feelings of guilt and messages of failure ensue and keep you there until you vow to “get back on track” again.

This happens to just about ev-ry-one.

Our bodies want to survive and when we aren’t meeting its needs, it will take over and do everything it can to make sure we meet our needs.

It has nothing to do with self-control.

It is physiology and psychology.

And restrictive plans are impossible to maintain long-term for these reasons.

This is why pursuing weight loss or wellness through restriction does not ultimately work.

So it’s not you, it’s them.
